bill etc... Have the girls fill out the amounts that they think their family
spends on these items per month. Talk about the importance of taking care of

of stopping for food, which roads are the best, or whatever you want.
- ARE YOU LOST?: Part of preparedness and
safety is in knowing directions, Teach the girls how to find north by the
stars and by the sun. Teach them the acronym "Never Eat Soggy Waffles" for
north, south, east, west. Practice knowledge of directions(north, south, east
and west) by making up a treasure hunt in and around your home or church
grounds. place numbered clues with verses containing directions on landmarks
using trees, flagpole, fences, sheds etc. Have a treasure treat at the end
of the clues. When I did this the girls gathered puzzle pieces at each site
and at the end they put the puzzle together and it was a simple map showing
where the treasure was. The map had an N on it for north .
- SHOPPING THE SALES!: This was a really fun activity. I brought
a few copies of our local grocery stores ad for the week and found my coupons
I clip that matched the sale items. Our store does double coupons on Tuesdays
so I had the girls look through the ad and find what was on sale as I held
up the coupon. When they found it in the ad, I had them figure how much it
would be with the coupon and them with the double coupon. Some of the items
ended up being free, or we made a few cents. They really had a good time and
I gave them each a candy bar at the end of the activity (4 for a $1.00 with
a buy three get one free offer!). The mom's told me their girls really enjoyed
this activity and wanted to go shopping with them.

they yellow pages for it. Show them the emergency numbers and government

all of the different sections and what is in each one. Read some of the headlines
and stories. Look at the adds, obituaries, movie reviews etc... and talk about
the importance of reading the paper and staying informed about current events.
Play a game where you ask them to find something and see if they can locate
it in the paper. You could ask them what the weather is going to be on Tuesday.
What "G" rated movie they could go to on Saturday at 1:00pm. What store has
a sale on towels, What is the most interesting story etc...

care (save a couple of your own loads!) we learned how to sort laundry by
color and fabric, what types of colors/fabrics work best with each temperature,

how they helped with this task in their own family. Angela, Cape Girardeau,

items such as a small flashlight, water, granola bar etc. We labeled each item

words of Christ. There were several items that we were able to purchase at
the local dollar store and put in the kit. These were the ideas we used there
