- FIRST AID CLASS: Contact the American Heart Association or Red
Cross and take a first aid class.
- FIRE SAFETY: Visit the local Fire station and have the fire fighters
tell about fire safety.
- BACKPACK FIRST AID KIT: Make a small first aid kit to keep in
their school backpacks. You can go to your local pharmacy and ask them for empty
prescription bottles and they will donate them (most the time) make sure you
put in emergency numbers, change for a pay phone, band aids, safety pin, needle
and thread and anything else you can think of. My girls loved doing this and
if you ask dr. offices they may donate gauze or band aids.
- SAFETY SEARCH: Set up things around your house that are unsafe.
IE: Iron still on, pan handle hanging off of the stove, unsafe electrical cords,
etc... have the girls walk around the house and write down anything that they
see that is unsafe. Talk about the things that they discovered.
- LARGE FIRST AID KIT: Get a one gallon can (used for year supply)and
recycle it! Make a first aid kit that the girls can use while camping amongst
other things. Copy a list of basic things that are used in a first aid kit,
and let the girls fill it up. To get started, take the can and some blank strips
of paper and write on the paper situations and questions to react to for first
aid. Let the girls take turns taking a paper out of the can and tell everyone
what they would do in that situation or answer the question. Let each girl
take home a can to fill.
- FIRE TRUCK: We had a fire truck come to the church and the firefighters
discuss fire safety. The girls loved it!
- HOME ALONE RULES: Have a lesson about what the children should
do when they are home alone. IE do not answer the phone or door,Keep doors
locked, do not cook or light candles... Make a list of emergency phone numbers.
Let the children take the list home and put it by their phone. Make sure each
child knows which neighbors house they can go to in an emergency.
- SELF DEFENSE: Take a self defense class. Check in your area for
people who teach self defense. They may give you a great deal if you bring
an entire class with you.
- LEARN ABOUT FOOD STORAGE: Discuss food storage. Read the recent
talks from President Hinkley about getting food storage. Discuss what the girls
can do to help motivate their parents to follow the Prophets council. They
could inventory the storage that they have at home. Challenge them to see that
their families get 14 days of water storage, or begin getting wheat...
- BABYSITTING FIRST AID: Have a class on infant CPR and what to
do when someone gets hurt while babysitting brothers and sisters or neighbors.
Talk about cuts, burns, scrapes, bruises, choking etc... and when to call 911.
- IDENTIFICATION KIT: Complete a personal identification kit for
each child. Call your local police or Sheriff's office and ask if they have
any identification kits. Some places will let you go to the police station
and they will take finger prints and pictures and keep them on a computer file.
If you can't find a kit, you can go to trishaautryfoundation.org and
print out the form on your computer. (It has a place for finger prints and
personal information.) This is a wonderful site with lots of good safety preparedness
information. It also has instructions for a do it yourself DNA kit that is
easy. Unfortunately we live in a day and age that this type of thing is necessary.
Being prepared in this way could save a life some day.
- SAFETY LEARNING CENTER: Find out if your community has a Safety
Learning Center. Orem, Utah just opened "The Community Safety Learning Center" at
Fire Station No.3. The center is open Monday-Thursday from 8am to 5pm. The
children are taken through rooms where they are taught, and allowed to experience,
safety procedures in each room of a house. Bedroom, Bathroom, Kitchen etc...After
the hands on tour they are shown around the fire station and are given a coloring
book, pencil, rulers and badge. This activity is free and very educational
and fun for children. A must do activity!
- APPLESAUCE: Collect and/or purchase apples and make applesauce
as a class. This teaches food storage, home canning and making use of the bounties
of the earth. This should be done in the fall when apples are plentiful. This
could also be used in Family Skills
- Go to your area Bishop's Storehouse & have a canning night. I took my 10-11 year old girls & had a blast! It was one of their favorite activities of the year. We toured the whole facility to see everything that goes on there and talked a little about the church programs and then we canned enough of 4 different items that each girl could go home with 2-3 cans of each one. Just call your ward cannery specialist to get the phone #.
